Like people dogs learn through practice and repetition. Behaviors need to be ingrained into their life for it to become habit. Therefore, training your dog should be a constant process. You should have set training times where you go over lessons with your pup in short intervals but the lessons can be extended beyond just the set training times.
As your dog learns different behaviors during training you can incorporate them into your daily life. If you start with teaching your dog to sit you can move from a simple lesson with treats as a reward and start to use life rewards. Have your dog sit at the door before you go out and he will be treated with a walk. Have your dog sit when he brings you a ball and you will throw it again for him. There are many ways to incorporate the lessons in training in real life and as you do you will be constantly enforcing the training you have done in controlled environments. Use constant reinforcement of the lessons your dog has learned as often as possible in their lives and before you know it the lessons will become habit and you can build on it. Remember you are working hard to train your dog for a reason so make it worth the time and use the training as often as possible.

If you have a breed that needs lots of grooming train your dog to tollerate grooming as a pup. It makes life better for you and your dog!
