Can Bedbugs Travel On Dogs?

After the news in NYC that you could pick up bed bugs at the movies and from sitting during your commute on the subway, we were asked by a reader if you could get bed bugs from dogs.  The frightening answer is yes.

Bedbugs can survive wide ranges of temperature so we are susceptible to infestations year round and with New York City under siege from the gross pest it is a serious threat.  It is estimated that 1 in 10 New Yorkers have had bed bugs in their home which is double the number in 2009.  The bugs travel from host to host by hitchhiking in on clothing, luggage and if you have an unlucky dog your dogs fur.  They can hide in their fur and begin to nest in the corners and cracks of your house.

So what do you do?  Get rid of them as soon as humanly possible if you have them.  For tips on ridding your house of bed bugs with dogs around check out this article.  If you find out someone has bed bugs, keep your dog away from their home and since an outbreak of them could be a very long saga make sure you wash your dog, spray them with a pet safe bed bug spray and pray to god you do not get them.
