Jane Hammett-Bright is a top Sheltie breeder with some of the most beautiful well behaved shelties we have ever seen.  Despite her busy schedule as a breeder and handler, she took some time to answer some questions regarding this beautiful and playful breed.

How long have you been working with your breed?
Since 1972

How and why did you get started with your breed?
I raised collies and loved the look of a "little collie".  When I met a dog names Ch. Chenterr's Thunderation...I said to myself, " I want a dog like that".

Can you give us a brief history of the breed?
Herding breed from the Shetland Islands.  An alert, quick agile obedient dog

What are the biggest misconceptions about the breed?

They are not collie like at all

What kind of activities are good for the breed?

Agility, retrieving, and herding.  Kids do well with a sheltie

What are a few characteristics of your breed (if you had to pick a few words to describe it?)
Loving, obedient and super smart

What are three little known facts about the breed?
males are devoted to you, they loved to be taught things, they have a super memory

Why would you turn down someone as a potential owner for this breed?
If the dog has to live in a crate they will not get one...if they are just too busy to teach it anything

What type of household is ideal for the breed?
any kind..... Kids and cats are a plus as shelties get alone with almost any dog or animal

What types of tests should be done to assure healthy puppies for this breed?
OFA cerf VwD

What are common issues or problems with the breed behaviorally?
They will bark sometimes, they like to chase things...it takes a leader to own a dog

What would you like potential owners to consider before getting the breed?
They shed, they like to play, they are active, they love to learn

Is there anything else you would like potential owners to know?
My puppies come with their breeder as a mentor.  I'm here to help if you have a problem.  Most of my puppy buyers call me for another puppy.  As it is the best dog they have ever owned

What makes your dogs special?
I trust my dog(s) around anyone, any other animals, in any situation.  They are happy, healthy, and wonderful companions!

I have one of Jane's puppies. Her name is Butter; her dam is Luna (Luna took Best of Breed at Westminster this year). Butter is wonderful and I cannot imagine my life without her; she'll be three years old in December. She is fun, smart, funny, very active and loving. In a word, Butter is PERFECT! And I'm honored that Jane let me become a part of the Shadow Hill family.
